Here at Tuition Academy, our Year 6 students after months of preparation are approaching their SATs. As parents, you may be feeling worried about how your child may cope with exams. We have some tips that might help you, and your child, with any exam anxiety!
Firstly, do not let your child know how worried you may be feeling about their exams! Try to encourage and allow them to think positively about the tests. They will be more than prepared to sit the exams and to walk in calmly will help them. Try to ask your child what they think they are good at as positive thinking will help them walk in confidently. It will also help them to take responsibility of any key areas they may need to focus on in their revision.
Try to sit with your child and work out when they can do revision and practise tests during these final days. Create a revision timetable together that will help them feel responsible about their work. However, getting the balance of work and breaks is crucial. Allowing your child to exercise (ride their bike outside or listen to some music) will help their brain to absorb information.
With any small facts or key terms your child may need to remember, try to stick post-it notes around the house. Also, you can ask your child to recount and teach you a topic. This helps their learning as they are testing their own knowledge by explaining what they need to do. This is particularly helpful with tricky Maths methods!
When your child sits and revises, make sure their work space is clutter free and away from distractions. Put them in a comfortable space where they can revise quietly or complete practise exams under timed conditions.
Particularly when exam week hits, try to make sure your child gets a proper night’s sleep. This gives them the energy they need. It’s also important they eat slow-release energy foods throughout their revision and exam period.
Remind yourself and your child that exams are only one important aspect of their life. If your child tries their best and uses the tools that they have been taught throughout their education, they should leave the exams happy with their own achievements. We, at Tuition Academy, are very proud of all the hard work of our Year 6 pupils. Lessons will continue after the SATs as we start our Bridging the Gap syllabus between Year 6 and Year 7. Good luck!
