Primary Support – Key Stages 1 and 2 – Years 1-6, Ages 5-11

English primary curriculum is aimed at getting young learners:

  • Reading easily, fluently, and with good understanding
  • Writing clearly, accurately, and coherently
  • Acquiring a wide vocabulary
  • Speaking, listening, and using discussion to explain their ideas

Our English Key Stage 1 tuition is aimed at enhancing students’ Literacy skills, helping them reach their age group target levels and giving them a solid foundation for the rest of their education, while nurturing their confidence and social interaction skills.

In Key Stage 2 English tuition, we continue developing all the elements of the literacy syllabus including spelling, reading, and comprehension, while encouraging students to apply their learning and develop their reasoning skills.

The aim of our Key Stage 2 English classes:

  • Build students’ levels up before they start 11 Plus preparation in Year 5
  • Prepare students for SATs and the transition to secondary school in Year 6

Key Stage 3 – Years 7-9, Ages 11-14

Key milestones for Key Stage 3 English:

  • Reading – becomes wide, varied, and in-depth.
  • Writing – students start writing at length, including formal and academic essays, as well as writing imaginatively.
  • Spoken language – underpins reading and writing. Students learn to use conventions for discussions and debate, as well as collaborate with their peers.

Beginning from Year 7, students learn over a dozen more subjects and often need supplementary tuition to maintain focused learning.

Our Key Stage 3 English tuition supports students during this significant growth period by improving and consolidating their school learning, while encouraging participation and building their confidence levels.

Our teachers are experienced at identifying each student’s individual abilities and talents, quickly recognising if a subject area needs to be honed or the student is ready for more advanced learning.

GCSE – Years 10-11, Ages 14-16

Our GCSE English tuition is a 2-year study programme that combines English Language and Literature, includes both Foundation and Higher levels, and is structured in accordance with the main exam boards. Students sit their GCSEs at the end of the 2-year period and receive two grades in English and English Literature.

Our weekly 2-hour classes are designed to support students’ school learning, securing their subject knowledge, and develop effective exam taking skills.

We recommend starting GCSE English tuition at the start of Year 10, giving students the best chance to absorb and apply their knowledge at a manageable pace.

In addition to weekly English tuition in Maidstone and Medway, we run additional intensive revision classes in February and during the Easter break to get students into the best shape for the exams.

FAQs

Supplementary education at Tuition Academy Maidstone and Medway gives students a strong academic foundation and vital skills to succeed at school and beyond.

How does supplementary education at Tuition Academy Maidstone and Medway differ from classroom study?

At Tuition Academy, we are passionate about teaching students and giving them comprehensive subject knowledge, as opposed to coaching them how to pass exams. We provide a structured, personal, and differentiated learning environment, enabling students to study at their best individual pace and ability. Our teachers engage with our students within a small group, ensuring our students’ learning objectives and needs are met.

Will my child receive support during the examination period?

Of course. We provide full support and advice for all our students before, during and after their exams. Students are welcome to come to the sessions with any questions they may have about participating in exams. Our dedicated staff are on hand to help students achieve their true potential and boost confidence levels.

Are all your staff experienced teachers?

Yes. All our staff are expert specialist teachers and skilled teaching assistants who are passionate about their subjects.

Do you provide all learning resources?

All learning resources are included in the tuition.

Is a one-on-one tuition option available?

Although we don’t provide regular one-to-one tuition, we ensure all students have the support they need. If your child is struggling with a subject area and needs some extra help, our experienced teaching assistants with advanced subject knowledge are happy to provide one-to-one assistance.

How will my child’s progress be monitored?

Our teaching staff use their experience in identifying an individual’s abilities and personally monitor your child’s progress. Our teachers will highlight specific areas which may need more attention whether this may be a subject, topic or learning technique. As a parent/guardian, you are welcome to ask our team questions regarding your child’s progress at any time.

When should I start preparing for 11 Plus?

We highly recommend starting 11 Plus preparation one year in advance. We provide specific 11 Plus preparation including exam technique guidance, confidence building, and mock tests, ensuring students feel ready for the test they take in Year 6 before progression into Secondary or Upper School the following September.

If your child needs to raise their subject knowledge levels before starting 11 Plus preparation, we recommend joining our classes in Year 4.

Are 11 Plus mock exams available?

Yes. We have a range of dates available for students to participate in mock exams, allowing up to 6 students to participate per session. Courses work on a ‘first come – first served’ basis and must be booked in advance. Mock Exams will be taken under strict exam conditions and each paper will last 50 minutes. Each paper will be marked and returned enabling students to use for revision. Prices and exam duration vary depending on the course choice.
