As our new term and new year starts at Tuition Academy Rochester Ltd., here is a helpful guide for any new students and parents.
The 11+ can be a confusing and stressful time for Year 4 and 5 students and parents. Our 50-week curriculum helps to teach and revise the skills needed to sit the 11+ Kent and Medway exams. Each week we focus on two topics alternating between English and Verbal Reasoning; and Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
At Tuition Academy Rochester, we focus on the entire spectrum of skills required for both the 11+ Kent and Medway tests.
On arrival, students will be given a Tuition Academy folder that includes a spellings list; English book; Maths book; times tables booklet; and homework pocket.
This folder should be brought every week and each item should be labelled with the student’s name. When students work is completed, marked and returned, Tuition Academy recommend that parents file the sheets away at home for further revision. Every week, Year 4 and 5 students will test spellings in their English books and we recommend parents check their scores regularly.
A helpful tip for preparing for the 11+ exam is to use our spellings list and regularly ask your child a spelling, definition or synonym/antonym for random words. This extra revision at home is vital to help pass the 11+ Kent and Medway exam.
Additionally, every week Year 4 and 5 students will test times tables in their Maths books. Students should practise times tables at home on scrap paper and prepare for the speed test in lesson. Tuition Academy Rochester recommend that parents consistently ask their child times tables to help their confidence and skills for assessments and the 11+ exam.
To ensure that parents know what their child’s homework is, students are given a homework sticker in their English book. This details exactly what homework is due for the next week. This will include what spellings and definitions to learn; what times tables to practise; and tasks to complete that they would have learnt/revised during lesson. Homework always corresponds to the 11+ skills and topics that students have learnt and practised in lesson that week.
For Year 4 students, and some homework tasks for Year 5 11+ students, students are given weekly homework sheets to complete. These should be placed in their Homework Pocket and returned completed with their name on the week due.
Once homework is marked and returned to students, Tuition Academy recommend that parents revise topics with their child that they may lack confidence in.
For Year 5 11+ students, Tuition Academy’s new homework portal is perfect for parents to review their child’s progress. The portal practises a wide variety of 11+ question types in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and vocabulary. Each week, Year 5 11+ students are set homework on our homework portal that encourages independent study and learning. The instant test results can be reviewed straight away with explanations for any incorrect answers.
Finally – now our Year 4 and Year 5 11+ parents should be more familiar with our curricular and how students lessons are organised at Tuition Academy. Each week, students should attend lessons with completed homework; their folder; a bottle of water; hand sanitiser (to be used on arrival and throughout the lesson); tissues; and stationery (coloured pens, pencil, ruler, rubber, some highlighters, etc.).
The best way to feel prepared for the 11+ Kent and Medway exam, is to remain focused, calm and organised throughout 11+ preparation. This guide should help all Year 4 and 5 11+ parents understand the routine for their child during lessons at Tuition Academy Rochester. We continue to work hard to develop our pupil’s progression and preparation for the 11+ exams.
